Egg Recall

by Crunchy Mama on August 20, 2010

Ok people, I’m sure you’ve all heard about the egg recall and this is why you should get you some chickens. Besides the fact that they make good pets (really, they do), if you are feeding your own hens and harvesting their eggs, you can prevent some of the health violations that Wright County Eggs committed. Like forcing workers to handle dead chickens and manure with their bare hands. And live in rat-infested trailers. Or allowing hog manure runoff to contaminate your eggs.

This DeCoster guy owns Wright County Eggs and runs it like an agricultural sweatshop, resulting in all sorts of violations and contaminations, the most recent of which is this nationwide salmonella outbreak. Apparently he just pays the fines and doesn’t change operations. Good job, FDA and USDA.

If you can’t get chickens, at least buy organic eggs. They are much less likely to contain salmonella. Yes, they’re more expensive but they taste better and don’t give you explosive diarrhea.

For a full list of the brands affected, go here. The official recommendation if you have any of the contaminated brands is to make sure you cook them fully (?) or return them for money back.

I wish we could have chickens. But I would need a yard big enough where the chickens could be separate from the dogs, since Sadie would MURDER them, and also someone to clean the coop out for me. I don’t do chicken poo.
In the meantime I will settle for organic or local eggs. We have a couple farmers that supply some fresh eggs, one of which told me the other day that ‘his girls have finally quit broodin and he’s gettin a swell mess of eggs from ‘em every day.’

Oh! I want some eggs from this farmer person. Can we just strike a deal that when you find good stuff you will get me some and I’ll reimburse you. I want some delicious brown eggs. Yes, I firmly believe brown eggs taste better.
