We Three Moms

SDS has been telling us how much she loves Meat-low. “Meatloaf?” you are saying to yourself. Um, no. Just ask SDS- she is very quick to correct you: “SDS, you like MeatLOAF?”…”NO! It’s Meat-LOW.” “Uh huh- ok.”  What’s the point in trying to correct a bossy 4 year old?

When I first heard that she liked this southern staple, I was understandably surprised and excited- I was about 22 before I actually liked meatloaf. She has been asking for it for the last couple of months and so finally last week I decided I would make it for her. I kind of have a certain meal I make with meatloaf, which includes quartered potatoes tossed in Lipton Onion Soup mix and olive oil- they are DE-vine. And usually I make a roasted vegetable too. I made a special trip by the grocery store, which meant that I got out in 100 degree weather and got what I needed to ‘fix’ her dinner.

After braving the weather, I commenced to slaving away in the kitchen- of course, in no time it was hotter than freaking Haides in there because I had the oven on and it’s, as previously stated, 100 DEGREES OUTSIDE!!!! And yes, I know that it is a sin to run the oven in the summertime in Mississippi, but I was trying to fix my child a dinner that consisted of something other than a sandwich.

She was excited and I was happy to do it. Everything was rolling along fine until I put the plate down for her. She screamed in horror (no exaggeration) and starting crying and saying through ragged breath: “That’s NOT MEATLOW!! That’s NOT MEATLOW. You didn’t fix it right!!!”

Let me just stop right here and say that after actually sweating while cooking, this is not the reception you want for your meatloaf. For the life of me, I had no idea what she was talking about. Turns out she thinks meatlow is the following: chicken fingers, mac-n-cheese, and orange slices. WHATWHATWHAT????? Yes, apparently in her sweet little 4 year old brain she has confused that meal with meatloaf and whoa unto the unsuspecting parent who thinks otherwise.

Since the above episode she has asked me everyday if I am going to make meatlow like they do at her school. I think we all know the answer to that question… turkey sandwich anyone?
